Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877) was a poet, journalist and teacher in Finland. National poet of Finland, the author of the text of the Finnish national anthem, the leading figure in the great national awakening.He wrote in Swedish, the national literature in Finnish did not unfold until the second half of the 19th century. Fänrik Ståls Sägner (Stål's Ensign Stories) inspired by the Russo-Swedish War of 1808-1809, is considered to be the largest Finnish epic alongside the Kalevala.

The first poem in the volume, Vårt land (Maamme) later became the Finnish national anthem. The poem praises the beauty of the homeland and connects the fate of the homeland and the nation. It was originally made for the city of Porvoo to celebrate its 500th anniversary,

Runeberg himself wrote a melody, but it became an anthem with music by Fredrik Pacius. Runeberg's oeuvre played an important role in shaping Finnish national consciousness and patriotism.
